Diabetes Mellitus

Exercise plays an important role in controlling diabetes by:

  • Regulating blood glucose levels
  • Increasing your sensitivity to insulin
  • Controlling your weight
  • Lowering your blood pressure
  • Reducing your risk of heart disease
  • Reducing stress

Ideally you should be exercising for 30 minutes a day (or 3 x 10 minute sessions). Start with 10 minutes and build up. You do not need to puff to benefit from exercise. You should still be able to talk without becoming breathless.

Exercise improves circulation, which can help to prevent associated problems with skin healing and feet.
